About me

Dr Katy Brown

I am a Research Fellow in Language and Social Justice at Manchester Metropolitan University. My research focuses on the mainstreaming of the far right, exploring how far-right politics becomes normalised in society. Rather than focusing on the actions of the far right in driving its own success, I am especially interested in the key role played by mainstream actors from politics and media in this process. Only by accounting for these important contributors can we look to counter the growing prevalence of exclusionary politics in society. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

Prior to my current role at MMU, I completed my ESRC-funded PhD on far-right mainstreaming during the Brexit referendum at the University of Bath. I then secured an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship at Maynooth University to study broadsheet reporting on the far right in the UK, Ireland, France and Italy.

I have published articles and chapters on the topics of mainstreaming, far-right discourse, populism, methodology and research ethics. I have published a book on discourse analysis with Palgrave Macmillan and have a book contract with Bloomsbury on the mainstreaming of the far right. I am an Associate Editor at the Journal of Language and Politics, taking responsibility for the sister website languageandpolitics.com.

I have been interviewed about my research by national and international media outlets, such as Al Jazeera, France24, Euronews, BFM Radio and RTV Slovenia.
